Spring sports are in full swing, and the weather is FINALLY getting warmer! Healthy knees play an important part to an enjoyable and successful season. A severe knee injury can sideline an athlete for an entire season and can have long term ramifications. Soccer has a high prevalence of knee injuries, with a higher incidence in females.
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is of particular concern. The ACL is responsible for keeping the tibia (shin bone) from sliding forward, and to prevent excess rotation of the knee. It has been shown that 50% of those that suffer an ACL tear will develop osteoarthritis in the knee 10-20 years after the injury.

Prevention & Treatments for Knee Injuries
- Exercises to strengthen the knee and surrounding areas.
- Cold Laser Therapy
- Kinesiology Taping
- Rapid Release Therapy
An essential element to preventing knee injuries is a preventative exercise program to help strengthen the knee and the structures surrounding it. This program should include exercises that increase flexibility, balance, strength, and agility. A preventative program will also increase performance such as vertical height and sprint speed.
As always, if you suffer an injury to the knee think P.R.I.C.E (Protect, Rest, Ice, Compress, and Elevate). Knee injuries should be evaluated by a doctor to assess any potential damage that might require further treatment. When you seek care from Parkhurst Chiropractic we can treat your running injuries and have many tools to assist and speed up your recovery such as rapid release, low level laser therapy, kinesiology taping, whole body vibration therapy and exercise programs.
