Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT KIND OF CONDITIONS OR COMPLAINTS DO CHIROPRACTORS TREAT?

Some of the symptoms that chiropractors commonly treat include: headaches, numbness, back, shoulder, neck, chest, rib, arm, leg, ankle and feet pain; abnormal curvature of the spine; muscle spasms, whiplash, sciatica, muscular aches and pains, joint pain, sports and auto injuries, hand pain, joint stiffness and repetitive motion injuries.

DOES CHIROPRACTIC WORK FOR ALL AGES?

Chiropractic can benefit all ages. At Parkhurst Chiropractic, we treat patients as young as a few days old to patients in their late 80's. Babies and children with colic, ear infections, common colds, constipation, asthma, bedwetting, "growing pains", attention deficit disorder, hyperactivity, and curvature of the spine have been helped with chiropractic. Mothers-to-be can receive relief from pregnancy related pains. Senior citizens with arthritis, joint pain and stiffness, constipation, and osteoporosis may also be helped.

WHAT IS A SPINAL ADJUSTMENT?

A chiropractic adjustment is the art of applying a specific force in a specific direction to a joint that is subluxated, "locked up," or not moving properly. The purpose of the adjustment is to eliminate nervous system interference and improve spinal function. Adjustments can be delivered by hand or by using a small hand-held tool called an Activator.

DO SPINAL ADJUSTMENTS HURT?

Although each patient reacts differently, the procedure is rarely painful. It can cause a variety of reactions from temporary soreness to a sense of relief and well-being. The spinal adjustments given at Parkhurst Chiropractic are specifically designed for the individual patient's comfort, tolerance, and safety.

WHAT IS TRACTION?

Mechanical and intersegmental traction machines are tables with built in machinery to stretch and tone the back passively. Traction helps the spine to heal through increased vascular and lymphatic flow. It stimulates the reflexes and helps to tone muscles. This tends to reduce fatigue and restore elasticity and resiliency of the tissues. In the spine, it encourages the expansion and contraction of the disc tissues, thus improving their nutrition.

DO INSURANCE PLANS COVER CHIROPRACTIC SERVICES?

Few people realize that most insurance policies cover chiropractic care. In fact, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Aetna and Medicare have covered chiropractic care for years, and many HMOs and PPOs offer chiropractic care to their subscribers. Injuries resulting from auto accidents are covered by auto insurance, on-the-job injuries are covered by the employer, and some in-home injuries are covered by home-owners policies. Our staff will be happy to contact your insurance company to determine what chiropractic benefits are available to you.
