The Doctors
Dr. Brian Parkhurst, DC and Dr. Karla Parkhurst, DC
Dr. Brian received his Bachelor’s Degree from Southern
Illinois University in park and recreational administration with
the goal of managing a large recreational area. The direction
of his life changed when he was seriously injured in a snowmobile
accident. After medical doctors, neurologists and surgeons could
not help him, he was taken to a chiropractor. After his first
treatment, 60% of the conditions were alleviated.
In the next six months, he totally recovered from his injuries
due to the chiropractic care he received. He was so impressed
with the chiropractic field that he sold his house, moved to
Davenport, Iowa, and enrolled in Palmer College of Chiropractic.
Dr. Karla received her Bachelor’s Degree from University
of Wisconsin-Madison in Bacteriology. She always wanted to be
a doctor and at the age of 12, after being bucked off a horse, she had her first encounter with
a chiropractor. Because of the treatment she received - and his personalized attention - she made the decision to be a Doctor of Chiropractic.
She is working towards board certification in anti-aging medicine as well as studying to become a Doctor of Naturopathy, which focuses on the proper balance of hormones, neurotransmitters, vitamins and minerals to realize optimal health.
Dr. Karla’s interests focus on women’s health concerns such as balancing hormones, neurotransmitters and proper nutrition. She also helps patients with many conditions such as healthy aging, managing fatigue, fibromyalgia, hormone imbalances and weight management.
Dr. Brian and Dr. Karla met at Palmer College and were married
on June 11, 1999, the same day they both received their Doctorate
of Chiropractic degrees from Palmer College, the most prestigious
chiropractic college in the world. They traveled with the Palmer
College Abroad Program to India twice offering free chiropractic
care to the poor of that country.
The Parkhursts opened their chiropractic clinic in Holland on
January 18, 2000. The methods used by the doctors are based on
the importance of treating not only the spine but also the soft
tissue (muscles, tendons, and ligaments). They constantly strive
to improve their knowledge in the health care field by attending
continuing education seminars.
They believe in mental, emotional,
and physical well-being and focus on restoring patients to maximum
well-being and optimal health in as short a period of time as
possible. Dr. Brian and Dr. Karla utilize specific and gentle
adjusting techniques along with personal and compassionate care.
Multiple approaches to care include nutrition, stretching, exercise,
and most importantly, listening to and educating patients about
their condition and how their body works.
Firm believers in the incredible healing power of the body, both
Dr. Brian and Dr. Karla design their treatment to stimulate the
body’s ability to heal itself. Their goal is help as many
people as possible achieve maximum well being through affordable
and upbeat personal health care.
In addition to performing all functions of chiropractic, the
doctors have special interests. Dr. Brian enjoys working
with babies, children and the elderly in addition to special
needs patients such as the handicapped or patients with sports
injuries. Dr. Karla's interests focus on women’s
health concerns such as hormonal issues and pregnancy in addition
to fibromyalgia and clinical nutrition.
The doctors are Century Club members of the Michigan Chiropractic
Society, members of the Michigan Chiropractic Association,
the Doctors’ Speakers Bureau, the Holland Chamber of Commerce,
and the Palmer College Alumni Association.
Dr. James Friess
Dr. James joined the staff of Parkhurst Chiropractic
on October 27, 2003. He is a 2001 graduate of Palmer College
of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa and a graduate of the University
of Toledo with a degree in cell biology. He previously worked
as a chiropractor in Holland and in Toledo, Ohio.
Dr. Friess was among the first group from Palmer College to travel
to Vietnam on a chiropractic mission trip.
In addition to his knowledge and experience in general chiropractic
care, he also enjoys the challenge of working with sports injuries
and rehabilitation, designing exercise programs for patients
and securing pelvic stabilizers (foot- levelers) to assist his
patients in living a pain-free life.
Dr. James enjoys golf, physical fitness, gourmet foods and reading.
He resides in Holland with his wife Dianne.
